Gary Casassa

11/4/1955 – 12/7/2016  -- Gary Anthony Casassa, age 61, was born at St. Mary's hospital in San Francisco, and grew in the same home in his beloved Sun Valley neighborhood, where he later raised a family himself.  He passed away peacefully at home from Melanoma cancer.  He often reminisced of cruising 4th street in his youth, blaring classic rock music in his green mustang.  His classic rock knowledge was unrivaled.  He enjoyed studying the lyrics of some of his favorite bands and sharing his extensive vinyl collection with family and friends on a daily basis.  One of his greatest passions was out on the softball diamond.  He was the Redwood High School Varsity softball coach for 28 seasons.  He won numerous MCAL and NCS titles, as well as an induction into Redwood HS Athletic Hall of Fame earlier this year.  Gary was co-owner of Marin Cleaners, a fifth generation, family-owned and operated business for over 60 years.  As a teen, he spent summers helping his dad at the cleaners and eventually he resumed the family legacy, alongside his brother Bill and nephew Marc.  He was a respected board member of BEAM, a longtime business group in Marin in which he attended every Friday.  He loved teaching and learning about history, astronomy, geography and wildlife.  His passions included music, sports, and fantasy football.  He also loved nature.  Family road trips often included a National park stop, a cave and a waterfall hike.  His love of people was evident in his work, his community involvement and in his coaching.  He saw the beauty in everything and the good in everyone.
